I never thought I’d write an
article about vacuum cleaners, and it’s kind of a funny story how this came
about. I was sitting at my keyboard surfing the internet, just passing the
time. And for whatever reason, probably boredom, I noticed out of the corner of
my eye that my keyboard was clogged and full of crumbs and dirt between the
keys. The
first thing I tried was flipping the keyboard over to shake the dirt loose…no
luck…hmm…I turned my attention back to the internet and began to search for a
solution.
After about 20 minutes of fruitless
searching I came across a website selling a set of “Mini Vacuum Attachments”
for detailed cleaning jobs. I quickly
placed an order; it cost about $15. When the package arrived only a couple days
later, I proceeded to pull out my dad’s ancient Electrolux canister vacuum from
the basement. This metal vac is a champ. It’s at least 20 years old, but it’s
still kicking—still packs a punch. From the mini attachments set I took out the
mini crevice nozzle piece, which is basically like a miniature funnel, and
attached it to the end of the vacuum wand. I have to admit that I was a little
skeptical, but my fear quickly subsided when I turned on the vacuum and was
able to clean every inch of my keyboard. I think I got a little carried away,
because I didn’t stop there. I ended cleaning every piece of electrical
equipment in my house.
After this awesome experience I
jumped back on the web and returned to that helpful website and searched for more nifty attachments for my
Electrolux. I came across a refrigerator crevice tool, shag rug rake, dust mop,
shutter blind vacuum attachment, car nozzle tool—they all seemed tempting and
too good to be true, like forbidden fruit from the vacuum gods.
I guess I just didn’t realize the
variety of uses for an Electrolux vacuum. And aside from the various
attachments a person can use, a lot of the older Electrolux canister models can
be converted into blowers, which make them a godsend for seasonal cleaning and
what not. I guess I just never put two-and-two together as a kid watching my
father use our vacuum to help with leaf cleanup. In any case, I’m glad that I
didn’t settle for that “canned air” stuff that most people use to clean their keyboard,
and instead forayed into the exciting world of vacuum attachments and
accessories. Up to this point my dad’s old Electrolux was just an antique
collecting dust, but now it’s a versatile cleaning machine.
