The Many Uses on an Electrolux Vacuum

I never thought I’d write an article about vacuum cleaners, and it’s kind of a funny story how this came about. I was sitting at my keyboard surfing the internet, just passing the time. And for whatever reason, probably boredom, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that my keyboard was clogged and full of crumbs and dirt between the keys.  The first thing I tried was flipping the keyboard over to shake the dirt loose…no luck…hmm…I turned my attention back to the internet and began to search for a solution.
After about 20 minutes of fruitless searching I came across a website selling a set of “Mini Vacuum Attachments” for detailed cleaning jobs. I quickly placed an order; it cost about $15. When the package arrived only a couple days later, I proceeded to pull out my dad’s ancient Electrolux canister vacuum from the basement. This metal vac is a champ. It’s at least 20 years old, but it’s still kicking—still packs a punch. From the mini attachments set I took out the mini crevice nozzle piece, which is basically like a miniature funnel, and attached it to the end of the vacuum wand. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical, but my fear quickly subsided when I turned on the vacuum and was able to clean every inch of my keyboard. I think I got a little carried away, because I didn’t stop there. I ended cleaning every piece of electrical equipment in my house.
After this awesome experience I jumped back on the web and returned to that helpful website and searched for more nifty attachments for my Electrolux. I came across a refrigerator crevice tool, shag rug rake, dust mop, shutter blind vacuum attachment, car nozzle tool—they all seemed tempting and too good to be true, like forbidden fruit from the vacuum gods.

I guess I just didn’t realize the variety of uses for an Electrolux vacuum. And aside from the various attachments a person can use, a lot of the older Electrolux canister models can be converted into blowers, which make them a godsend for seasonal cleaning and what not. I guess I just never put two-and-two together as a kid watching my father use our vacuum to help with leaf cleanup. In any case, I’m glad that I didn’t settle for that “canned air” stuff that most people use to clean their keyboard, and instead forayed into the exciting world of vacuum attachments and accessories. Up to this point my dad’s old Electrolux was just an antique collecting dust, but now it’s a versatile cleaning machine.

How to Keep Your Vacuum in Good Repair

A good vacuum cleaner will last around 8 to 12 years.  It is a good idea to maintain and repair your vacuum often. If your vacuum is not functioning well the first thing to do is to identify the problem and then know what part needs replacement. Replacement parts are not that expensive. Your manual may have instructions on how to remove and replace your parts. To check your machine, make sure it is unplugged.  The most common parts that need repair are the hose, belt, switches and brush roll.  Inspect the hose, wand and cleaning tools to locate any obstructions.  Debris often collects where one part plugs into another. Remove the parts one at a time. Push a broom handle through the hose and wand.  Look for cracks in the vacuum hose which can cause air leaks. Check the bag and clean or replace all filters.  Replace belts, in connecting a new belt you will need to remove the roller from the vacuum cleaner. Check to make sure the brush roll is spinning....

Central Vacuum Cleaners

Central vacuum cleaners also referred to as a built in vacuum cleaners consist of a vacuum power unit which is typically installed in a utility room, garage, or closet; and a 30-35 foot hose which is plugged into a inlet valve which is in the wall or floor; you can then attach any vacuum cleaner attachment to the end of the hose, such as a power nozzle, floor brush, dusting tool, upholstery tool, and crevice tool. Central vacuum cleaners are more effective than traditional HEPA filters, if they are exhausted outdoors. Therefore there will be no emission emitted back into your indoor environment, leaving you a cleaner healthier home. The dirt travels through the wall and collects into a drum which is part of the power unit, and is typically empitied on a semi-annual basis. Central Vacuum Cleaners can be installed in both new construction and existing homes.
