The Eureka Mighty Mite Vacuum Cleaner is little powerhouse of a machine. I purchased this vacuum online from evacuumstore.com. They shipped it free of charge and the vacuum was at my door within days. I hadn't done much research. I had just wanted to switch from the cheap bagless upright that I had had and get a small and lightweight, bagged canister. At first I wasn't sure if I'd like a canister vacuum, but now I am really happy with the purchase for a few reasons. It is compact and stores in my closet easily. All of the tools store on the machine nicely. The suction is more than I expected and the floor nozzle easily pulls dust from the sides. Its effortless and makes vacuuming actually fun. Having worked at a vacuum shop who's top selling brand is Electrolux, I see why people are attached to their vacuum or the vacuum of their parents.

The all metal canister was built to last. The stylish silver-gray with light gray trimmings was an easy sale for door to door salesmen of the day. My mother and father had purchased this vacuum along with a shampoo machine. It was bit heavier than today's plastic canister vacuum but narrower and easy to store. No damage could be done to it. My mother would have me vacuum with from time to time and I remember it being smooth and quiet. I also remember being fascinated by the power nozzle's spinning brush and the suction in general. There were always carpet in my home as a child and being a kid there was always dust and dirt to clean up. My mother was no fool teaching me to vacuum, I guess. The hose was also interesting because it was really heavy duty and had a cool diamond checkered pattern made from a hard cloth-like vinyl material.

I do not know why my folks eventually got rid of this machine, but I realize that they shouldn't have. Unplug the canister and remove the 24 volt wiring.

Using both handles on the dirt bucket, slide the canister stright up off the mounting brackett, and place the machine on the ground.

Remove 3 small screws from the top of the of the canister, and then remove the top cover. You should now be able to access the motor.

Now remove the 3 bolts on the motor, and unhook the motor contacts. After this is done you will now be able to remove the motor. Also remove the coupling on the horn of the old motor and place on the new motor.

Clean the screen bleow the motor if necessary.

When putting in the new motor make sure there is a gasget between the motor and the canister create a tight seal, then tighten the bolts and reconnect the motor terminals.

Put the top cover back on and put the machine on the wall.

Take out the bag and keep the door open.

While the bag door is still open, turn the machine upside down so you are looking at the serial number.

Pull the cord out one foot.

Use a puddy knife and put it between the rubber side rails and the butt end of the machine.

Use a hammer or mallet to hit the putty knife from the back of the rubber bumper toward the bag door. Pull the rubber bumper straight out on both sides.

Once both bumpers are out pull the lower body of the canister from the butt end toward the intake of the machine.

Electrolux to create vacuum cleaners from plastic harvested from polluted oceans

Electrolux just launched its “Vac from the sea” initiative to get plastic waste out of the world’s oceans and into home appliances made of recycled plastic.

There are plastic islands, some several times the size of the state of Texas, floating in the world’s oceans. Yet on land, stocks of recycled plastic are much too small to feed production of sustainable plastic products. Electrolux intends to gather plastic from the world’s oceans and turn it into a number of vacuum cleaners in the new initiative “Vac from the sea.”

The aim is twofold: to bring attention to the issue of plastic pollution and to raise awareness on the scarcity of recycled plastics needed for making sustainable home appliances.

“We struggle to get hold of enough recycled plastics to meet the demand for our sustainable vacuum cleaners,” says Cecilia Nord, Vice President, Floor Care Environmental and Sustainability Affairs, Electrolux.

Diving, fishing and scavenging for plastics
The plan is to make a limited number of vacuum cleaners from plastic debris harvested from the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans and the Mediterranean, Baltic and North Seas. The techniques for harvesting the plastic will vary depending on the location – from diving after it to scooping it up from the waves. “We will work with volunteers and experts that live close or work with this problem,” says Nord.

Out of the ocean – and into the cycle
More recycling directly translates into more sustainable appliances and homes, according to Jonas Magnusson, Business Segment Manager within Electrolux Floor Care. “Our engineers have managed to get our green range vacuum cleaners up to 70% recycled plastic, but our ultimate vision is of course 100%, and for all ranges.”

The main barrier to using more recycled plastic in home appliances is the scarce and uncertain supply of recycled raw material. Much research and progress is currently being done by the recycling industry. However, to fix the imbalance in supply and demand and get the cycle working properly, overall consumer perception must change.

“The ‘Vac from the sea’ project aims to do just that – educate consumers,” says Nord. “This issue is much too important to leave to politicians. Companies, consumers and politicians are equally accountable for the situation.”

The origins of Electrolux can be traced back to the introduction of the vacuum cleaner, the invention of the absorption refrigerator and a marketing genius named Axel Wenner-Gren.

Legend has it that Mr Wenner-Gren saw an unwieldy Santo vacuum cleaner in Vienna and went to work for them. When he had learnt enough, he went home to Stockholm, worked on his idea with colleagues and staff and presented the Lux 1, the world's first household vacuum cleaner in 1912.

In 1925 the first Electrolux absorption refrigerator was launched and Electrolux started in its quest to be the largest household appliance producer in the world.

1901
AB Lux, Stockholm, is established. The company launches the Lux lamp - a kerosene lamp for outdoor use - which proves to be a tremendous sales success. The lamp is also used in lighthouses all over the world.

1908
Lux moves to a plant at Lilla Essingen in Stockholm. The company feels the competition from electric lighting and looks for new products.

1910
Elektromekaniska is established in Stockholm.

1912
Collaboration between Lux and Axel Wenner-Gren begins. The first vacuum cleaner, the Lux 1, is produced at Lilla Essingen. Axel Wenner-Gren becomes the agent for Lux in Germany, United Kingdom and France.

Home sales begin in Sweden. The salesmen, who pull the heavy machines through the streets on hand-carts, must arrange a demonstration time when the housewife can promise that her husband/breadwinner will be home to approve the investment.

1915
Axel Wenner-Gren sets up the sales company Svenska Elektron (later Finans AB Svetro). The method of home demonstration and hire purchase becomes increasingly well-established and proves a great success.

1917
On October 30, 1917, Elektron (In which Axel Wenner.Gren owns a large interest) purchases all the shares of Elektromekaniska. Wenner-Gren is elected member of the board of Elektromekaniska and likewise, Sven Carlstedt joins the board of Elektron.

1918
Elektron and Lux sign a cooperative agreement for the following:

Lux is to take over operations of Svenska Elektron, increasing its share capital from SEK 3 million to SEK 4 million.
Svenska Elektron, which had previously bought Elektromekaniska, is to buy 49% of the shares of AB Lux. Wenner-Gren and Carlstedt are elected to the board of Lux. Wenner-Gren is appointed CEO and Carlstedt is appointed technical director.
1919
On August 1, an agreement is reached between AB Lux and Svenska Elektron AB (in which Wenner-Gren is the dominating owner) giving Elektron the sole sales rights to AB Lux vacuum cleaners. The agreement, which is valid through 1929, obligates Elektron to buy its vacuum cleaners from Lux and show Lux the manufacturer on all the vacuum cleaners.

At the Annual General Meeting on August 29, Elektromekaniska AB (wholly owned by Wenner-Gren-dominated Elektron) changes its name to AB Electrolux. The new name is a combination of Elektromekaniska and Lux.

1921
Model V is launched. It is regarded as the first step towards an easy to use vacuum cleaner for ordinary homes. Pay extra close attention to the runners - an invention by Mr Wenner-Gren himself. They were in use on Electrolux machines well in to the 1960's.

1922
Swedish engineering students, Baltzar von Platen and Carl Munters, from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, present a sensational invention - a machine that produces cold through heat using a new and brilliant application of the absorption process. The machine can be driven by electricity, gas or kerosene.

1923
The production of refrigerators based on Platen-Munter's invention begins at a newly formed company, AB Arctic.

1925
Electrolux purchases Arctic and launches the first absorption refrigerator, the ''D-fridge'' on the world market. For many people ''this wonderful box'' solves the problem of storing fresh food at home.

1926
The first plant for the production of vacuum cleaners outside Sweden is opened in Berlin, Tempelhof. Axel Wenner-Gren acquires Volta from Skandinaviska Banken. Axel Wenner-Gren becomes chairman of the board.

1927
Electrolux builds vacuum cleaner plants in Luton, England and Courbevoie, France. These plants are eventually equipped for the production of refrigerators. Production begins in a number of countries all over the world.

1928
The share capital in Electrolux is increased ten-fold from six million Swedish kronor to 60 million. The turnover at five plants, some twenty subsidiaries and 250 offices throughout the world is SEK 70 million.

The Group is consolidated and introduced on the London Stock Exchange (1930 on the Stockholm Stock Exchange).

The first built-in refrigerator is launched, a compact product for the kitchenette in the small, modern apartments of the time. Harry G Faulkner is appointed president.

Vacuum cleaner production begins in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, USA. The first air-cooled refrigerator is produced. Electrolux presents L1, the first air-cold refrigerator.

ElektroHelios is acquired for SEK 36 million. This company, which was set up in 1919, has 2,500 employees. The merger gives Electrolux new and important production units in Mariestad (compressor refrigerators) and Alingsås (food service equipment), among other things. Through the purchase, Electrolux acquires an extremely important product group: cookers. The capacity of the central laboratory at Lilla Essingen is almost doubled.

The new Electrolux logo is launched.

1964
Luxomatic is the first of a new generation of vacuum cleaners with features such as a cord winder, self-sealing paper dust bags and a dust indicator that shows when the bag is full. It also becomes a symbol of the strength – and economic strength in particular – of the Electrolux Group and its vacuum cleaner division.

1965
The Group's turnover passes the billion kronor mark. The long economic boom continues for the remainder of the year. A decision is made to build a cooker plant in Motala. The sale of absorption refrigerators rockets.

Hans Werthén becomes president. The restructuring of the divided Western European white-goods industry begins.

The office machinery company Facit is acquired - a purchase outside the principal business sphere of Electrolux. The deal brings with it the production of kitchen and bathroom cabinets (Ballingslöv).

The upswing for the absorption refrigerator technique accelerates. The Group purchases manufacturers in Luxembourg and Germany (Kreft, Siegas) to meet the demand on the European market.

It has long been clear that a powerful foothold in the US household appliance market is essential. A number of small acquisitions in sectors such as laundry-service, materials handling and agricultural machinery take place.

Electrolux moves into the French market. The white-goods manufacturer Arthur Martin and the vacuum cleaner company Tornado are acquired. These deals include Nestor Martin of Belgium and Menalux of Switzerland. The purchase of Tornado also includes a subsidiary in Holland. The Electrolux Swedish household appliance sector is strengthened by the acquisition of Husqvarna. The deal also brings an entirely new addition to the product range - chainsaws. Electrolux strengthens its position on the South American market by acquiring the second-largest white goods manufacturer in Brazil, Refripar, which later becomes Electrolux do Brasil.

The Group begins a two-year restructuring program with the purpose of improving profitability. Streamlining of Group operations begins, with the divestment of the industrial products sector and production of sewing machines, agricultural implements and interior decoration equipment. Consumer Information on Boil Orders

Boil water orders or advisories are public announcements advising the public that they should boil their tap water for drinking and other human consumption uses like cooking, hand washing, brushing teeth, etc. Boil water orders are preventative measures issued to protect public health from waterborne infectious agents that could be or are known to be present in drinking water. Boil water orders are issued by the MassDEP Drinking Water Program (DWP) when MassDEP DWP determines that the consumers of a particular public water system should take precautionary measures with their tap water.

When a boil order or advisory is issued the local public water supplier (PWS) must take appropriate corrective action, continue to monitor its water supply, and notify customers when it has remedied the problem and the boil water order is lifted. The PWS should be contacted for details, and in limited instances consumers may find more information on their city or towns web site. For general information on boil water orders consumers may also check the MassDEP or US EPA website and fact sheets on contaminants.

Below are general precautions MassDEP recommends you take when a boil water order has been issued for your community.

General Precautions

DISCARD any ice, juice, formula, stored water and uncooked foods that were prepared with tap water during the period of concern.

USE BOILED OR BOTTLED WATER for drinking, food preparation, mixing baby formula, making ice, washing food, manual utensil and equipment washing, rinsing and sanitizing, brushing teeth or any other activity involving the consumption of water.

CHILD CARE CENTERS AND SCHOOLS should use only bottled or boiled water for mixing infant formula, hand washing, and for mixing sanitizing solutions for diapering areas and surfaces such as tabletops and toys. Adult employees should use a hand sanitizer after washing hands with tap water and soap. Do not use drinking fountains and discontinue the use of water play tables. Follow all guidance provided by the Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE) and/or the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC).

RETAIL FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS must follow the guidance of the local board of health and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MassDPH). Wholesale food manufacturers must follow the guidance of MassDPH. Meat processing plants must follow the guidance of MassDPH and the United States Department of Agriculture.

SWIMMING POOLS, HOT TUBE, AND SPAS that are operated properly, including routine monitoring for adequate disinfection levels, may continue to operate.

SHARE THIS INFORMATION with all other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received thsi notice directly (for example, visitors). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

TRANSLATE THE PRECAUTIONS for anyone who does not understand English. Tips for drinking water use during a boil order There are two simple and effective methods you can use to treat drinking wate for microbiological contaminants (bacteria).

Boiling: Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute. Laboratory data show this is adequate to make the water safe for drinking.

Disinfecting: Disinfectant tablets obtained from a wilderness store or pharmacy may be used. In an emergency, liquid chlorine bleach such as CloroxÂ© or PurexÂ© can be used at a dose of 8 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of bleach to each gallon of water. (Careful measurement with a clean dropper or other accurate measuring device is required when using liquid chlorine bleach.) Let stant for at least 30 minutes before use. Read the label to see that the bleach has 5-6% chlorine.

Washing Dishes It is best to use disposable tableware during the time the water needs disinfection. If that is not possible, the following steps should be taken:

Wash dishes normally but be sure to rinse them in a solution of 1/8 teaspoon of bleach, as mentioned above, in a gallon of warm water (submersion in a dishpan for a minimum of 5 minutes is advised). The dishes should be allowed to air dry. Gloves should be worn when handling bleach to minimize any skin irritation. Because of the many variables involved with dishes washed in a dishwasher, it is recommended that you use the additional rinse step, as described above, after washing.

Bathing and Showering Young children should be given sponge baths rather than put in a bathtub where they might ingest the tap water. Adults or children should take care not to swallow water when showering.

Brushing your Teeth Use only disinfected or boiled water for brushing your teeth.

Ice Ice cubes are not safe unless made with disinfected or boiled water. The freezing process does not kill the bacteria or other microorganisms. Washing Fruit and Vegetables Use only disinfected or boiled water to wash fruits and vegetables that are to be eaten raw.

Hand Washing Use only boiled or disinfected water for hand washing.

Cooking Bring water to a rolling boil for 1 minute before adding food.

Infants For infants use only prepared canned baby formula that is not condensed and does not require added water. Do not use powdered formulas prepared with contaminated water.

Houseplants and Gardens Water can be used without treatment for watering household plants and garden plants. The exception would be things like strawberries or tomatoes where the water would contact the edible fruit.

House Pets The same precautions taken to protect humns should be applies to pets. Aquatic organisms (e.g. fish) should not be exposed to water containing elevated levels of bacteria. If the organism's water needs to be refreshed use appropriately boiled or bottled water.

Flush All Taps When The Boil Water Order Is Lifted When flushing it is important to carefully follow the instructions provided. Flushing your household and building water ines including: interior and exterior faucets, showers, water/ice dispensers, water treatment units, etc. Water heaters may need to be disinfected and flushed to remove any contaminated water. Some types of water treatment devices may need to be disinfected or replaced before being used. Check with the manufacturer for details. Read more about flushing.
